Varmints

 summary

The main character Vermints (rabbit-like character), is having a wonderful time surrounded by nature, suddenly, there is dark heavy architecture in front of the character, and all of nature is rotten by anonymous power. Vermints took one stick from the tree and hid it in his bag. Vermints started to live in a monochrome city and looked stressed. Every day he goes to a rooftop to get fresh water for his plants. One day the fruit of the plants flew away to the city and transformed into liquid and squishy material. Another day, Vermints gave a part of his plants to cheer his neighbor. All of a sudden, the plants started to die and the entire city was collapsing. He caught his eye seeing jellyfish-like creatures flowing around the city and picking up citizens using tentacles. As soon he tried to run out of his building, although, he could not forsake his neighbor. After he entered the neighbor's room, it was completely empty but the window was opened. Vermints also desired to be picked up by the unknown creature to escape from the devastating city, he ran through the buildings and fainted before he was picked up by its creature. When Vermints realizes, he was inside the creature's domed-shaped body surrounded by nature. When he found out there was one plant in front of him and his neighbor, the third point-of-view scene slowly faded out.

Opinion

The short film called "Vermints" was a great animated film in 2008. It is a visually stunning and surprisingly animated film that explores themes of friendship, and overcoming obstacles. In the film, Vermints tends to act differently from other characters shows that he is not well involved in the community. However, he was able to find friendships that were felt to be nurtured through plants. The emergence of jellyfish-like objects was a symbol of freedom from a suffocating society. Also, the Vermints rarely tried to relate to other people, but the other people joining the jellyfish suggest that everyone in that city had the same idea. Also, plants not only represent friendship, but also change. Because the plants he was growing would eventually bear fruit and have a great impact on the people around him. I thought this is something that is relevant to our modern society.
